I write :

if guess_row = ship_row 
guess_col = ship_col
print "Congratulations! You sank my battleship!". 

The error message  that i get says : 
File "python", line 29
    if guess_row = ship_row
                       ^
SyntaxError: invalid syntax

does this mean that using an equal sign is not permitted or is just not one of the correct way of using it?

== not = if you mean equal in Python

if (x == y)
